The scope of this product included designing an innovative product and creating a business around it. The goal was to gain entrepreneurial skills and grasp a holistic view of a product development cycle. I had to produce a quantity of 10 of my product to be sold at our annual end of semester design showcase.

Deliverables: 10 of the product, 5 year business plan, bill of materials with standardized manufacturing and packaging costs, Etsy store, branded packaging, and showcase display.

PROCESS

I chose to develop a grease container as my semester long product. I cycled through many different form iterations and landed on a playful, unrealistic pig form. Oink highlights key features of a pig, enlarged for humor. I partnered the silly form with handcrafted ceramic as the material.

I created CAD models of the form and 3D printed models. Using these models I cast plaster slip-cast molds so that my form could be reproduced in large quantities. Once the slip was poured and removed from the molds in clay form now, I was able to add more details by hand before putting them in the kiln to be fired and become solid.

Stop using pickle jars to store grease! This ceramic container serves to store your bacon grease in a playful and attractive way!

All of the pieces securely fit into each other and store grease to be used later in cooking or disposed of once congealed. Each piece represents a key feature of a pig: the top as a nose, the strainer as ears, and the vessel as a tail. The pig features are enlarged to create a humorous appearance that will brighten any kitchen counter.

-food safe
-heat safe
-size of overall form: 4.6 x 7 in

Each ceramic piece is slip cast from a custom plaster mold and detailed by hand. Note that each piece is hand glazed thus may differ in appearance slightly.

We hope to add a little fun to your cooking experience as you stick your fingers in your pig's nose to lift up the top and pour bacon grease into your pig.
